I started reminiscing about old racing games with a friend which made me want to go back and play Gran Turismo 3. And damn what a soundtrack! 99 Red Balloons by Goldfinger, Turbo Lover by Judas Priest, Stone Free by Jimi Hendrix, Kickstart My Heart by Motley Crue, and She Sells Sanctuary is just perfect when blasting around Seattle. And I think Def Beat by Junkie XL was in everything, video game or not, around the year 2000.
Speaking of Seattle, where the hell is that course now? I also miss Smokey Mountain, Tahiti Circuit and Swiss Alps. I also miss the super polished animated menus, the orange and green HUD with that awesome flashing tach in the corner, and a racing AI that seemed to care (try arcade mode on hard or professional). Everything in the newest Gran Turismo games feel so sterile, like the series felt like it had to grow up and be taken more seriously. Dammit, Gran Turismo 3 knew how to have fun. It was colorful, vibrant and exciting. And the best part, the 787B had no goofy front wheel covers.

The original soundtrack was brilliant as well. Great game.

This is exactly what I am talking about! All of GT3 had this flashy and fun feel. The music was upbeat and peppy. The new games make you feel like you’ve walked into a fancy piano lounge and the concierge is judging you for wearing jeans.

Death In Vegas - Aisha. Legendary. It reminds me of banging the Suzi Escudo Pikes Peak around the boards on the test track endurance race. 1 set of Super Softs all race baby, let the track do the steering!

That jazzy interlude between races was, IMO, better than the on-track soundtrack.

GT2 and GT3 were the best. All the newer games lost their edge somewhere. Kind of like how many people prefer the E46 to F80 M3.
And what happened to El Capitan? And Red Rock Valley? And why did they have to modify all of the old tracks on the newer games? I know they’re very similar, but there are lots of little things that were changed that totally affect the way you can attack the track.

Damn straight it did. Loved that game. None of that opera bullshit in the new Forzas and Gran Turismos, just upbeat killer music.

How did I miss this? I came within inches of completing GT3, and I loved 99 Red Balloons. How did I never realize it was in the game?
I did love those songs by Feeder though.

Very nice indeed. I was actually just playing some OG Ridge Racer for PS1 the other day, good times.

I love the old Ridge Racers. When the front page did a list of video game cars and no Ridge Racer cars where on there (and even no mention of Ridge Racer in the comments), I got mad. I almost made a post of top 10 Ridge Racer cars but I got half way through and was like ‘is anyone going to read this?’ I mean, the series has dropped so far out of relevancy its not even funny.
